Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington got into a heated debate over a supposed ‘Christmas classic’ on Friday.
The dispute began after Nat, 56, filed a holiday season segment with a retro clip featuring British pop superstar Cliff Richard singing the song Mistletoe and Wine.
After telling the spectators that the Although the syrupy Christmas song had ‘hit’ the top of the charts in 1988, Nat admitted the song was new to her.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that song in my life,” he said.
Matt, 46, interrupted: “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you speak so loudly before.”
He then insisted to his viewers that the song “is still a classic today… put it on your playlist.”
Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington got into a heated debate over a supposed ‘Christmas classic’ on Friday.
The row began after Nat, 56, hosted a Christmas season segment with a throwback clip featuring British pop superstar Cliff Richard singing the song Mistletoe and Wine.
Nat wasn’t about to drop the subject and asked, “But would you call it a classic?”
Matt insisted he knew the tune, while news presenter Monique Wright said she had never heard of it.
However, it’s not entirely surprising that the Brekkie Central team have struggled to position Cliff Richard’s tune as a “classic” for fans Down Under.
The song never reached more than 30 on the ARIA charts in 1988.
Meanwhile, it was a huge hit in the UK, where it topped the charts, becoming Richard’s twelfth number one hit up to that point.
The song is also well known to UK listeners after it was used in a public service announcement about drink driving during the Christmas season.
It comes after Nat was left screaming on Sunrise on Thursday morning when she received a shocking surprise on live TV.
Co-host Matt presented her with a big Christmas gift, hidden under a blanket and a bow on a table.
After telling viewers that the syrupy Christmas song had ‘hit’ the top of the charts in 1988, Nat admitted the song was new to her.
But as she removed the red velvet sheet in her surprise, Nat began to scream when she discovered a contortionist performer writhing beneath her.
The fun began with Matt laughing as he joked, “I think it’s time to see what’s under Santa’s sack right now.”
He then pointed to the red sheet covering a huge box-like mass on a table and said, “Come in.” “I couldn’t be happier about this.”
“That sounded really strange,” Nat laughed. “I have no idea what this is.”
As she grabbed the edges of the sheet and prepared to remove it, Matt warned her to “be nice,” prompting her to ask, “Is there a person?”
‘No, what are you talking about?’ Matt said.
But Nat screamed as he ripped off the sheet to reveal that it was actually a person twisted into a human knot: ‘What the hell is that?!’
“He’s a human,” Matt said as the contortionist uncoiled his body and began to put on an amazing display of flexibility.
‘The thing is?’ Nat cried. ‘Oh my god. Oh, sugar. Oh wow. Oh my god. It’s a person.’
