A man cried in court as he expressed regret after being accused of murdering his wife in western Maine.
David Gaudreau, 60, appeared remotely at the hearing and at one point openly commented, “What the fuck have I done?”
He admitted it through tears, less than a day after a fatal accident on a stretch of Route 108. Callers reported that a truck pulled up next to the vehicle involved and was shot at, after which a woman was found deceased in the driver’s seat.
She was later identified as Dale Gaudreau, Gaudreau’s 59-year-old wife, Maine State Police said, after which he was arrested for her murder.
Meanwhile, Gaudreau allegedly called several family members to tell them he shot his wife, before turning himself in to police. He was then transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where he joined Wednesday’s proceedings remotely.

“What the hell have I done?” Gaudreau said through tears, appearing on screen only a few times while covering her face.
He did not enter a plea or speak again, jailed without bail pending a psychiatric evaluation yet to be confirmed.
This was his first appearance before a yet-to-be-announced trial, during which he will likely face first-degree murder charges.
Meanwhile, details of the case were not discussed, but Maine State Police said the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department began receiving emergency calls about the car crash the day before, shortly after 7 p.m.
Callers reported that a person driving a truck believed to be Gaudreau had pulled up next to Dale’s blue Hyundai to begin shooting, before driving away down a stretch of road in the small town of Peru.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South with the subsequent investigation, in which they spoke with members of the suspect’s family and residents who live along the road.
A resident who asked not to be identified told CBS affiliate 13-WGME how after hearing the gunshots, he initially thought it was fireworks and children, but then saw and heard Dale screaming, a memory he said. It will haunt him for a long time.
Fellow resident Roben Dollof, who also heard the gunshots, said she was at home with her husband when the commotion began, after which they “didn’t dare come out,” he said.

Other witnesses interviewed by investigators said more of the same, state troopers said.

“She was a true leader, served as a mentor to other nurses and received numerous awards for nursing excellence,” hospital president Stephany Jacques said in a statement, adding that “(her) thoughts are with Dale’s family during this difficult time.” ‘
Police further revealed that on Tuesday night, shortly before midnight, Gaudreau turned himself in of his own free will, after calling several unspecified members of his family to confess to the crime.
