Australian golf star Min Woo Lee has revealed he will play the Masters with a broken finger after suffering a freak injury in the gym last week.

Lee also enters the first major of the year with an untimely bout of flu, but remains optimistic after detailing exactly how he fractured the ring finger on his right hand.

“I dropped a dumbbell in my hand,” he said after playing nine holes at Augusta National on Tuesday with compatriots Adam Scott, Jason Day and Cameron Smith.

‘I was at the gym on Saturday last week. I was doing something like a side glute bridge and it was literally my last rep, last set, and I threw the dumbbell down and somehow cut my right ring finger. Break it.

‘So I went to the doctor and I thought it was fine because I could move it. It was simply red. I thought it would be fine. Then they came in and said, ‘You’ve broken it.’

‘So a lot of anxiety. This is the first time he has said it to the public. “As a team, we didn’t know whether to say it or not, and I felt like I had to tell people because there was a lot of pressure on me to play well.”

The 25-year-old looks to join her LPGA Tour star sister Minjee as a big winner and maintains, despite her injury and illness, that she can still compete for the green jacket.

But the West Australian admits he will have to dig deeper.

“You’ll hear it from my voice: I’m not 100 percent yet,” Lee said.

‘Other than that, I actually feel pretty good. It could have been much worse. I’m very happy to be here and especially to play nine holes and give 100 percent.

‘I mean, (the) recovery was miraculously good.

‘I have it bandaged right now. On Friday I hit my first shot of the last week, so I hit my first full driver. Honestly, it’s surprising how quick the recovery was.

“It was bruised, still swollen, but it didn’t really hurt that much, which is really strange.”

“Somehow I’m recovering very well, so I ice it and elevate myself as much as I can.”

The injury hasn’t even stopped Lee from lifting weights.

‘I still went to the gym last week as much as I could. Obviously I didn’t do that exercise,’ she said.

“Every time I looked at that 20-pound dumbbell, yeah, I gave him a dirty look.”
