The child molester of former Australian of the year Grace Tame has faced a Hobart court for allegedly harassing her through social media.

Nicolaas Ockert Bester, 70, was charged in October with three counts of using a carriage service to threaten, harass or offend.

Court documents reveal that the charges relate to public Twitter posts relating to and directed at Ms. Tame on April 27, July 21 and August 28 of this year.

Tame reported the allegations to Tasmanian police earlier this year, and the convicted pedophile’s Twitter account, @nicobester3, has since been suspended.

Bester appeared before Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded no guilty to the charges.

His bail continued and his next appearance will be on January 31. Bester did not speak in court or to the media outside the building.

Outside court, Bester faced a crowd of photographers and cameramen in heavy rain.

He and his lawyer used umbrellas in an attempt to shield their faces from view.

Earlier this year, Tame, the 2021 Aussie of the Year, alleged that Bester had bullied her online by referring to her childhood email address and an old Facebook login instead of her name.

Bester was jailed for two years and 10 months in 2011 for sexually abusing Year 10 student Ms Tame while she was teaching at St Michael’s Collegiate School.

Bester was 58 years old at the time.

Ms Tame has advocated for survivors of sexual assault and their right to be heard and was named Australian of the Year for 2021.
