Gabrielle Union says her soul was “crushed” when she learned that her husband Dwyane Wade got another woman pregnant while Union was undergoing IVF treatments to try to conceive.
The 48-year-old actress shares a raw account of the betrayal in her new book You Got Something Stronger, which Time published an excerpt on Friday.
In the piece, Gabrielle explains, “The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily—while I couldn’t—leave my soul not only shattered, but shattered into fine dust dispersed by the wind.”
Union and Wade would welcome daughter Kaavia in 2018 via surrogate mother.
Devastated: Gabrielle Union says her soul was ‘crushed’ when she learned her husband Dwyane Wade got another woman pregnant while Union was undergoing IVF treatments to try to conceive
The piece began: “In 2013, before we were married, Dwyane had a baby with another woman. It goes without saying that we weren’t in a good place when that child was conceived.’
Gabi and Dwyane started dating in 2008, but according to the athlete’s own 2020 documentary, the couple was on hiatus when son Xavier, now seven, was conceived.
At the time, Wade was already the father of Zaire, 18, and Zaya, 12, and was the legal guardian of his cousin, Dahveon, 18.
Although the couple “did much better” when he revealed his secret to her, she was heartbroken.
“To say I was devastated, just pick a word on a low shelf for convenience,” the actress explained. “There are people – strangers I will never meet – who are angry because I didn’t talk about that trauma before. I’ve had no words, and even after untold amounts of therapy, I’m not sure I have them now.’
Gabi was especially hurt considering how hard she tried to have a baby with Dwyane.
“The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily—while I couldn’t—leave my soul not only broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust dispersed in the wind,” she wrote.
‘We gathered what we could to slowly transform me into something new. There was no way to disguise where I was glued back together.’
Though the pair were ready to pick up the pieces, Union admitted that her “feelings didn’t come from a healthy environment,” largely because of her own struggles to conceive.
“What made the decision so difficult was that if I didn’t submit to a surrogacy, I was convinced I should let Dwyane go,” she confessed. “Even if he didn’t want to, I had to let him find someone who could give him what he wanted.”
After some thought, Union began exploring surrogacy options.
She and Wade married in 2014 and would welcome daughter Kaavia four years later.
Dwyane previously admitted that telling Gabrielle about Xavier was the “hardest” thing he “ever had to do.”
“I had a child with someone else and I had to tell her. The hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is tell Gabrielle Union I had a child with someone else,” he said in his documentary D. Wade: Life Unexpected. ‘I could not sleep. I wasn’t eating.’
“If you’re holding something that you know will come out and you have this information and you know it’s going to mess up someone’s life, what you care about, what you love, if it doesn’t hurt you, then you’re not human,” Wade continued. “… Me and Gab just went through something you never want to go through and we figured it out anyway.”
