Family of Brisbane man Shane McGrath make heartbreaking decision to turn off life support after e-bike accident at Story Bridge

The family of a man who was seriously injured in an e-bike accident made the difficult decision to turn off his life support as friends posted tributes on what would have been his 58th birthday.

Police believe he was traveling on a shared footpath when he lost control and crashed around 3.10am.

Emergency services attended the scene and took him to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition.

Shane McGrath, 57, fell off his bike while crossing the Story Bridge at Kangaroo Point, south of Brisbane, on Sunday morning.

McGrath was placed in an induced coma and his family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support on Wednesday.

His friends have paid tribute to him on what would have been his 58th birthday.

Peter Gabites paid tribute to his friend, with whom he used to ride horses.

“Today is a sad day with the passing of Shane McGrath,” he wrote on Facebook.

‘One of the guys I was touring downtown with when I had my big hit during Covid.

‘I wish you could have continued our conversations about traveling together in Romania.

Peter Fuller also paid tribute to his lifelong friend on social media.

“I have had the great pleasure of having Shane as one of my best friends for the past 50 years and we have remained in close contact during that time.,’ he said.

“I’ll miss you Shane, love you mate.”

Mr McGrath’s family and friends will gather at the Story Bridge Hotel on Thursday night to celebrate his birthday and his life.
