New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his anguish over the loss of lives in an earthquake in Taiwan, expressing India’s solidarity with the country’s “resilient” people.

He said on X: “Deeply saddened by the loss of life due to earthquakes in Taiwan today. Our sincere condolences to the relatives and wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured. We stand in solidarity with the resilient people of Taiwan as they endure this. its aftermath and recovery.” The strongest earthquake in a quarter century rocked Taiwan during the morning rush hour on Wednesday, killing nine people, trapping dozens of miners and sending some residents clambering out of windows of damaged buildings.

The earthquake, which also injured hundreds of people, struck off the coast of rural, mountainous Hualien County, where some buildings leaned at sharp angles and the ground floors were crushed.

Just over 150 km away, in the capital Taipei, tiles fell from older buildings and schools evacuated their students to sports fields, where they were fitted with yellow safety helmets.
