A group of eight US newspapers is suing ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the tech companies have been “stealing millions” of copyrighted news articles without permission or payment to train their AI chatbots. .

The New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, the Denver Post and other newspapers filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in New York.

Microsoft declined to comment Tuesday. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In December, the New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft on similar grounds, alleging that the creation and training of ChatGPT involved illegal use of copyrighted material. The Times said the technology companies’ product “threatens the Times’ ability to provide that service.”
