This year, Australia was represented by Electric Fields, but the band was brutally eliminated in the first semi-final which took place in Malmö, Sweden.

During Saturday’s grand final, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Kapsis, who made it to the final stage of the competition.

‘I wish this was Australia’s entry, but I love that we can vote for it!’ wrote one fan.

“Another Cypriot contestant who was born in Australia, the Cypriot-Australian breeding program for Eurovision is progressing apace,” another person on X joked.

The singer Nemo, who is the first non-binary winner of the contest, obtained 365 points with the jury and 226 from the public for a total of 591 with his song The Code.

Nemo used his childhood experience in opera to create an impressive performance that mixed rap, rock, drum ‘n bass and classical opera, as well as balancing on a spinning record that spun at high speed while singing a melody.

After being announced as the winner, Nemo tearfully said, “I want to thank you.”
