Arsenal have focused on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and want the Everton striker to lead the way in the next phase of their development under Mikel Arteta.

Calvert-Lewin was on Arsenal’s radar this summer, but there was never any possibility they could make a deal for the England international in August. However, he has been firmly on their wanted list ever since and is greatly admired at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta formulates plans for a life without Alexandre Lacazette, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Although the Arsenal head coach has indicated that the Frenchman could be offered a new contract, there is a good chance he will leave in June.

Arsenal would then have to fill a significant gap in their pay structure and Calvert-Lewin is considered the ideal candidate to come in and take over.

The question would be whether they can live up to the unavoidably high transfer fee, potentially in excess of £60million, that Everton would demand.

While it would be difficult, it wouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge as earlier this week, Everton manager Rafa Benitez explained the grim landscape Everton faces in the transfer market and how they may have to fire players to make their own signings.

“Some clubs have sold players at the right time and with the money they have received they have improved the roster,” Benitez said. ‘We have to learn that. The owner is willing to spend money, but we can’t spend all the time without returning money. So I think we have to be smart in the future.”

Calvert-Lewin – who signed Everton from Sheffield United for £1.5million – started the season with three goals in as many games as Everton got off to a quick start under Benitez, but the 24-year-old has since been transferred to the role of a frustrated spectator as injury has held him back.

Everton have missed his physique sorely and Sportsmail understand it will be at least three more weeks before Benitez can consider him, meaning Calvert-Lewin will miss Monday night’s game against Arsenal, followed by games against Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester .
