The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) may be repealed if militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is completely over, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Wednesday, while highlighting a positive change in the overall security situation in the Union territory.
He was responding to Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that the Central government will consider withdrawing the AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir.
In an interview with JK Media Group, Amit Shah also said that the government is planning to withdraw troops in the UT and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
“AFSPA is necessary to fight terrorists, but if there is no more militancy, it can be withdrawn. Amit Shah had rightly said as Jammu and Kashmir is moving towards peace and prosperity under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Anurag Thakur told reporters. the sidelines of a roadshow in Udhampur district.
The roadshow was organized by the BJP in support of party candidate and Union minister Jitendra Singh, who is seeking re-election from Udhampur parliamentary constituency for the third term.
“Jammu and Kashmir are moving in the right direction and the day is not far when the local police will have full control over providing security,” the minister said.
He said that the UT has witnessed tremendous development in the last ten years as the people of Kashmir have been freed from terror, stone pelting and daily disruptions.
“Jammu and Kashmir is changing with the return of peace, opening of cinema halls, generation of employment and massive sports activities,” he said, accusing the National Conference (NC), the PDP and the Congress of To destroy Kashmir through brutal corruption.
“The three families who have ruled J&K for most of the last seventy years are frustrated to see people staying away from terrorism and separatism and becoming part of democracy,” he said, accusing them of turning Kashmir from paradise on earth into a stronghold of terrorism. and pelting stones.
Seeking voters’ support for the party candidate, he said Jitendra Singh has played an important role in the Modi-led government and is honored and respected by the Prime Minister.
“The Modi government ensured the all-round development of J&K where more than 45,000 people lost their lives due to terrorism… There is a boom in tourism as a record number of holidaymakers of over two crore visited the valley last year, while witnessing huge investments,” he said.
Anurag Thakur also termed the alleged derogatory remarks by Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate and HS Ahir as “reprehensible and unfortunate” and alleged that the Opposition party is “anti-women”.

On holding parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that the deadline has already been fixed and “I am sure the elections will take place while the ECI team will make a fresh assessment (of the situation after completion of the Lok Sabha polls),” he said.
