Aerosmith have retired from touring after 54 years, revealing that the difficult decision was due to frontman Steven Tyler’s incurable vocal problems.

The 76-year-old singer suffered damage to his vocal cords while on tour last year and the band released a statement on Friday to reveal the news.

It read: ‘IT WAS 1970 WHEN A SPARK OF INSPIRATION BECAME AEROSMITH. THANKS TO YOU, OUR BLUE ARMY, THAT SPARK WAS IGNITE AND HAS BEEN BURNING FOR OVER FIVE DECADES. SOME OF YOU HAVE BEEN WITH US SINCE THE BEGINNING AND ALL OF YOU ARE THE REASON WE’VE MADE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HISTORY.’

‘IT’S BEEN THE HONOR OF OUR LIVES TO HAVE OUR MUSIC BECOME A PART OF YOURS. IN EVERY CLUB, ON EVERY MASSIVE TOUR AND IN GREAT AND PRIVATE MOMENTS YOU’VE GIVEN US A PLACE ON THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIVES.

‘WE’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BLOW YOUR MIND WHEN PERFORMING. AS YOU KNOW, STEVEN’S VOICE IS AN INSTRUMENT LIKE NO OTHER. HE’S SPENT MONTHS WORKING TIRELESSLY TO GET HIS VOICE BACK TO WHERE IT WAS BEFORE HIS INJURY. WE’VE SEEN HIM STRUGGLE DESPITE HAVING THE BEST MEDICAL TEAM AT HIS SIDE. SADLY, IT’S CLEAR THAT A FULL RECOVERY FROM HIS VOCAL INJURY IS NOT POSSIBLE. WE’VE MADE A HEARTBREAKING AND DIFFICULT, BUT NECESSARY DECISION, AS A BAND OF BROTHERS, TO RETIRE FROM THE TOURING STAGE.

‘WE ARE GRATEFUL BEYOND WORDS TO EVERYONE WHO WAS EXCITED TO HIT THE ROAD WITH US ONE LAST TIME. GRATEFUL TO OUR EXPERT CREW, OUR AMAZING CREW, AND THE THOUSANDS OF TALENTED PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE OUR HISTORIC CAREERS POSSIBLE. ONE LAST THANK YOU TO YOU, THE BEST FANS ON PLANET EARTH. PLAY OUR MUSIC AT FULL LOUD, NOW AND ALWAYS. KEEP DREAMING. YOU’VE MADE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE.’
