New Delhi:
Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party today strongly opposed investigators’ claims that Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal had gotten rid of his old phone, which likely contained data from the alleged liquor scam. The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating the case, has claimed that 170 phones were previously thrown away by witnesses to eliminate evidence in the case.
AAP had mocked the claims yesterday. Sources in the party claimed that the investigation “is being conducted from the BJP office”. The Enforcement Directorate, they alleged, is the “political partner of the BJP”.
Delhi Minister Atishi said this morning that the Enforcement Directorate is an “independent investigative agency”.
“If the ED has anything to say, they should file charges and say it before a judge,” she added.
“I would like to tell all ED officials that the Constitution and law of the land has given you some power. Do not violate this Constitution. Don’t kill the Constitution… You people are not an affiliate of the Bharatiya Janata Party. You are an independent investigative agency established under the laws of this country,” she added.
Sources in the agency said yesterday that the phone used by Mr Kejriwal two years ago when the alleged liquor fraud took place is missing. When asked about it, the chief minister said he does not know where it is, sources said.
Mr Kejriwal, arrested late on Thursday evening, is being questioned by the ED. He will remain in the agency’s custody until March 28.
