Arvind Kejriwal News: Aam Aadmi Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on Thursday

New Delhi:
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today called for a ‘gherao’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence to protest the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP has also planned a counter-protest demanding Mr Kejriwal’s resignation.

Here are the top 10 updates on this big story:

  1. Officials said all AAP MLAs and office bearers will gather at the party headquarters this morning and then march to the Prime Minister’s residence. The BJP’s mega march, meanwhile, will be led by Delhi Chief Virendra Sachdeva from the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium to the Delhi Secretariat.

  2. A protest was also organized by the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday, in which representatives of the INDIA bloc also participated. At a joint press meet, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said there is anger among the people over the manner in which Mr Kejriwal was arrested.

  3. Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely also hit out at the BJP. “Is this democracy? There is no level playing field for us. You are arresting elected chief ministers and seizing the accounts of India’s oldest political party. “Our leader Rahul Gandhi has waged a battle to save democracy. Congress will not step back on this issue,” he said.

  4. The INDIA Opposition Bloc has announced a mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday to protest against the arrest of Mr Kejriwal.

  5. The BJP is demanding that Arvind Kejriwal resign as chief minister after his arrest. The AAP, however, insists that Mr Kejriwal will remain the Chief Minister of Delhi even if it means functioning from prison.

  6. AAP leaders have changed their display photos on social media platforms to an image showing Mr Kerjwal behind bars to express solidarity with their party chief.

  7. In a message from jail read out by his wife Sunita Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister last week urged everyone to continue working for society and not to hate anyone, not even those from the ruling BJP. “There are several forces within and outside India that are weakening the country. There is no prison that can keep him behind bars for long. I will come out soon and fulfill my promises,” the Delhi Chief Minister added in his message.

  8. Arvind Kejriwal gave his first order out of the ED lockup on Sunday. “I want to tell the BJP that you can arrest Arvind Kejriwal and jail him, but you cannot jail his love and sense of duty for the people of Delhi,” Delhi Minister Atishi said, adding that the AAP leader might is in prison, but “no work will stop”.

  9. The Delhi High Court will on Wednesday hear Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest as well as a lower court’s order granting the ED his custody for seven days.

  10. The Aam Aadmi Party chief was arrested on Thursday and the next day, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court had sent him to Probe Agency custody till March 28. The central agency has accused the AAP leader of being a “conspirator”. The ED believes that the now scrapped policy provided an impossibly high profit margin of almost 185 percent for retailers and 12 percent for wholesalers.
