Actor Anne Hathaway considers filmmaker Christopher Nolan an “angel” in her life.
On her first solo cover of Vanity Fair, she addressed the 2013 viral phenomenon “Hathahate,” which portrayed her identity as “toxic” after she won Oscars for the musical Les Miserables, and also talked about how Nolan let her out of his projects sign, regardless of the hate she received following the Academy Award win, Variety reported.
“A lot of people didn’t want to give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online. I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who didn’t care about that and gave me one of the greatest roles I’ve ever had.” I acted in one of the best films I have been a part of,” she recalls.
Hathaway was referring to the role of NASA scientist D. Amelia Brand in Nolan’s 2014 space epic Interstellar. She had previously worked with Nolan as Selina Kyle in 2012 The dark knight stands upwhich earned her high praise just months before her Oscar campaign Les Miserables generated internet scorn in late 2012.
“I don’t know if he knew at the time that he was supporting me, but it had that effect. And my career didn’t lose momentum like it could have if he hadn’t supported me,” Hathaway added.
“Humiliation is such a hard thing to experience. The key is not to let it shut you down. You have to stay brave, and that can be hard because you’re saying, ‘If I stay safe, if I hug the one in the middle.’ , if I don’t draw too much attention to myself, it won’t do any harm.’ But if you want to do that, don’t be an actor. You’re a tightrope walker. You’re a daredevil. You’re asking people to invest their time, their money, their attention and their care in you. So you gotta give them something that’s worth all those things. And if it doesn’t cost you anything, what are you really offering?’ she continued.
