A man drowned after falling from a bridge into a river in front of horrified onlookers.

The man, who has not yet been identified, is believed to have fallen from the Lennox Bridge into the Parramatta River in Parramatta, western Sydney, about 7.10pm on Sunday night.

Emergency services attended the scene and pulled the man from the water.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite desperate attempts by first responders to revive him.

Police have established the crime scene and have launched investigations into the death.

Shocked onlookers watched from a nearby footbridge downstream as police surrounded the sheet-covered body on the riverbank.
