Chennai:

Three people were killed when the roof of the popular Sekhmet Bar on the busy Chamiers Road in Chennai’s Alwarpet area collapsed on Thursday.

Investigators say the roof of the first floor collapsed. There are conflicting reports about what led to the roof collapse.

Some point the finger at the subway work going on opposite the bar. Abash Kumar, chief of the state fire brigade, told WhatsNew2Day: “Two people have died. They have been identified as labourers. Rescue teams are working to see if anyone is still trapped.”

Officials added that “the bar was functional.”

“We are checking whether there was any major impact operation going on in the metro rail work around that time,” said Prem Anand Sinha, joint commissioner of police.

Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the roof collapse. City police have not yet issued a statement.
