This is the unfortunate moment clumsy winemakers had to clean up a £7,000 river of wine after accidentally causing a tank to leak last Friday.

Winery workers were attempting to transfer red wine from one tank to another to send it to be bottled at the Los Haroldos winery in San Martín, near Mendoza, Argentina.

But when they loosened a screw on the bottom cover to let air in, a buildup of pressure opened a hole.

The images show how the liquid gushed out of the huge container and fell to the ground, forming a river.

The winery revealed that it was missing 15,000 liters of wine after the incident.

Fortunately, workers finally managed to stop the spill and prevent another 35,000 liters from escaping from the 50,000-liter tank.

The company, which has been producing wine for decades, lost the equivalent of £7,400 worth of alcohol in the mistake.

Bosses said workers should have opened the top lid of the tank to transfer the wine.

The company will also have to shell out the equivalent of £19,500 for a new tank to replace the broken one.

Gustavo Martínez of Bodega Los Haroldos told local media: ‘Unfortunately we suffered the loss of the tank, which is no longer usable, along with 15,000 liters, a significant loss for our company.’

Helpless spectators stood around as the wine gushed from the vat.

At some points the wine puddle seemed quite deep and people had to walk carefully through it.
