But Xavi changed his mind after persuading him to keep Eto’o in a private conversation.
“Thankfully, you stayed because you were about to leave,” Xavi told his former teammate Eto’o on Instagram.
“Well, luckily you asked [Pep] that I stay. Thanks for that, ”replied“ Eto’o.
“We had to convince Pep to stay because you were the team’s goalscorer,” said Xavi.
“Ultimately, common sense and cohesion prevailed.”

Eto’o scored a whopping 36 times in all competitions to help Barcelona claim a historic treble in the 2008-09 season, raising the La Liga, Champions League and Cope del Rey trophies.
However, the Cameroonian star was sold that summer with Zlatan Ibrahimovic as his replacement, although the move was not entirely successful after the Swedish striker’s failure with Guardiola after a Champions League defeat to Inter Milan.
After the two had thought about their playing days together, the conversation quickly turned into Xavi’s coaching career.
The 40-year-old is currently in charge of the Qatari giants Al Sadd, but is closely associated with the job in Barcelona.

Xavi was approached by his former club to replace Ernesto Valverde in January – the same month he led Al-Sadd to the glory of the Qatar Cup – but Quique Setien was eventually appointed as his successor after rejecting the chance to return to Barcelona .
“The time was not right in January,” Xavi added. “I was having conversations with [Eric] Abidal and [Oscar] Grau and an important proposal, but it was not the time.
“I need a little more experience, training for Barca is my dream, I would like to manage them one day, I have said that many times before.”
