Barcelona manager Xavi claims he will be sacked and replaced by a new coach if their expensive summer business fails to deliver trophies this season.
Xavi was handed nearly £150m in new signings over the summer from Barça’s hierarchy; with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, Jules Koude, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie, expectations at the club have dramatically increased.
Still, the Catalans have not been able to live up to the hype this season so far. They lost two of their first four Champions League games to leave themselves on the brink of a group stage, while also suffering a defeat in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.
Xavi admits his head is on the chopping block at Barcelona amid their poor start to the season
Pressure is mounting on Xavi for his new-look squad to compete for silverware, and the legendary former Barca midfielder admits his head is on the chopping block.
“With the effort of the club and the selection we have, we have to compete for the trophies,” he said at his press conference before the game against Villarreal on Thursday.
“And if we don’t win, as the president said, there will be consequences, starting with me.
“If we don’t win, another coach will be added. But I’m going to give everything to make this work.’
Sunday’s El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid has raised more questions about Xavi’s reign
The Spanish club is also on the verge of exiting a group stage in the Champions League
That’s despite spending nearly £150m on a host of players, including Robert Lewandowski
Despite the current question marks surrounding them, Xavi’s side is still just three points behind LaLiga leader Real and a title win is well within reach this time frame.
Their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League are nevertheless a lot smaller. If Inter win Viktoria Plzen next Wednesday at 5:45 PM, Barca will be out of the league against Bayern Munich by 8:00 PM.
“The team’s situation is what it is,” said Xavi. “We started as a shot and now we’re not that good.
“This won’t stop me. We have to go step by step. We are three points behind the [LaLiga] leader and we must carry on.
“This is taking too long and we can’t stop. The road from success to defeat is so narrow.’
After meeting Villarreal on Thursday, Barca will host Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, before a potentially crucial Champions League night awaits next Wednesday against Bayern.
