Shocking CCTV has captured the moment two thieves accidentally set themselves on fire after a botched arson attack.

The clumsy thieves were attempting to set fire to a car outside a house on Swinburne Drive in Wangaratta, in northeast Victoria, on Saturday night when their actions backfired.

A puddle of accelerant was sprayed near the vehicle before the arsonists quickly walked away to ignite it from a distance, engulfing them.

One of the men can be seen rolling frantically on the ground while the other ran past in a ball of fire screaming as he tried to tear off his burning clothes.

Victoria Police detectives released footage of the failed attempt on Tuesday in the hope of locating the two men.

Officers allege the men broke into the nearby home and stole personal belongings before setting the car on fire outside.

The occupants were not home at the time.

The two men were last seen running toward Cambridge Unit.

It comes days after incredible footage emerged of another arsonist accidentally setting himself on fire while allegedly trying to set fire to a fast food restaurant in Melbourne in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Emergency services were called to a shopping area in Doncaster East at around 2.40am.

Police said two people drove to the shops on Doncaster Road in a white Toyota Tarago before approaching the shop with a jerry can.

One criminal stood guard while the other poured flammable liquid over the front of the store before setting it on fire, causing a ball of flames to erupt.

Seconds later, the criminal jumped back as his pants were engulfed in flames. His alleged accomplice quickly grabbed the can as he ran down the street with his pants on fire.

The couple stopped a short distance from the store and attempted to remove their pants.

Unsuccessfully, the burning man is seen running down the street with his flaming pants trailing behind them, apparently caught around his left ankle.

Anyone who witnessed any of the incidents or has images or information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
