Australian boxer Harry Garside has revealed he could be stepping away from boxing altogether as he discusses the new sport he will compete in over the summer.

Garside’s two-year dream of winning gold in Paris was snatched from her grasp in a devastating blow last month.

He lost his first fight in the men’s 63.5kg category to Hungary’s Richard Kovacs by unanimous decision after taking home bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 27-year-old broke down in tears after the crushing defeat, revealing he “felt like a failure” and indicating that “the next month or two” would be “quite challenging”.

Garside managed to bounce back from the defeat and has since released a book ‘The Good Fight’, which she revealed details of on Nova FM’s Fitzy and Wippa breakfast show.

Asked what his plans are after the Olympics, Garside indicated he is keeping busy.

‘Just stay fit… the decisions I made when I failed were negative, and I’m just trying my best to do more positive things,’ he revealed.

‘I train every day. I keep fit. I want to do some triathlons during the summer. I love boxing, so I’ll keep boxing, although I’m not sure it will be professionally and I don’t know anything about the upcoming Olympics.

“I could walk away from it altogether… I’ll keep doing it until I lose love for it.”

The former plumber revealed last month that he also found love unexpectedly.

“I woke up on New Year’s Day and said to myself, ‘Great year… no relationships, just focus on winning the gold medal,'” she said.

‘Through that process, I really fell in love… it happened so unexpectedly, which I think is the best kind of love… when you’re not looking for it, but it just appeared in my life.

“She’s originally from Sydney but currently lives in London so I’m really excited for her to be back at the end of the year… definitely worth the wait.”

The Victorian boxer also spoke about why he has sought success in boxing.

“I guess the more I think about myself and why I wanted success, it’s because I felt like I was nothing,” he said.

‘I don’t know where it comes from, and there are probably several memories I could recall, but most of my life I thought these gold medals, winning in sport, were going to change those beliefs about myself, and I guess that’s how it did along the journey.

‘But I won the Commonwealth Games gold medal and I sat in my room afterwards and felt miserable.

‘I won the bronze medal in Tokyo and I sat in quarantine, looked in the mirror with the medal hanging around my neck and kept doing all that, but I still didn’t like myself.’
