ECRU IT IS NEW BLACK
I used lockdown to clean up anything that wasn’t being worn regularly. I’m going to be left with all the neutrals that work the hardest as these pale shades are for summer what black is for winter.
Simple and easy to wear, they are flattering on the skin. Designers The Row and Jil Sander brought this minimalist look to this season’s runway: brands that are known for being quietly elegant and don’t want to scream with logos or flamboyance.
SOFT AND NATURAL
Apparently neutral colors are soothing, and maybe that’s why I love them in my busy life, despite having to keep my distance from Play-Doh and three young children’s sticky hands.
Camilla Ridley-Day shared advice for embracing the trend of neutral summer colors. Pictured: Top, £ 79, Cos; vest, £ 250, ME + EM; jeans, £ 99, Baukjen; flatforms, £ 250, LK Bennett; hat, £ 25.99, Zara; earrings, £ 265, Monica Vinader
This summer they refer to nature and combine soft shades of off-white, cream and ecru with materials such as linen, jute and organic cotton. These sustainable choices are not only trendy, but also have a long life.
TRY A ‘CUSTARD CREAM’
Try mixing these tones together for a look I call the custard cream: part warm cookie tones, part pale cream. All of these neutrals come from the same family, so you can’t go wrong experimenting with tops, pants, jackets, or accessories in different colors. These wide leg jeans from Baukjen (right) have replaced my trusty skinny and they’re so comfortable I wish I’d dropped them sooner.
GO FOR A SMART CUT
If you like a neat finish on pants, try Luisa Cerano’s slim-tailed cappuccino version, which has an excellent cut and will work well when you get back to the office. Elsewhere, Massimo Dutti looks better than anyone.
