A new Netflix true crime documentary released this week looks at the chilling case of a loving daughter who became a cold-blooded killer.
‘What Jennifer Did’ exposes the sinister case of a woman who murdered her own parents after they discovered her twisted web of lies about bad grades and forbidden romances.
In 2010, Jennifer Pan, then 24, carried out a plot to execute her parents in the quiet Canadian neighborhood of Markham, Ontario.
Her boyfriend at the time, Daniel Wong, helped his girlfriend hatch the gruesome murder plan and even introduced Pan to one of the hitmen whom she then paid $10,000 to organize a home invasion.
But who is the ex-boyfriend of the Canadian murderer and what happened to him? Here, FEMAIL lays out what Daniel Wong did and where he is now.
In 2010, Jennifer Pan, then 24 years old (ABOVE), carried out a plot to execute her parents in the quiet Canadian neighborhood of Markham, Ontario.
Her boyfriend at the time, Daniel Wong (RIGHT), helped his girlfriend hatch the gruesome murder plan and even introduced Pan to one of the hitmen, whom she later paid $10,000 to stage a home invasion.
Who is Jennifer Pan’s boyfriend, Daniel Wong?
Daniel Wong was Pan’s high school friend who had already dabbled in crime: he had a criminal record and had dealt drugs before.
She began dating him in the eleventh grade, even though her parents, Bich Ha and Huei Hann, who had arrived in Toronto as refugees from Vietnam, disapproved of their relationship.
Pan, on the other hand, who was a first-generation Canadian, had excelled as a student and as an ice skater in her formative years, according to school friends who previously spoke with Toronto Life.
However, she later stopped pursuing her studies when she was ‘snubbed’ for the best student award in her eighth grade class.
His grades began to decline to the point where he was averaging 70 percent in all of his classes except music by his freshman year of high school, but he kept his parents in the dark.
He decided to fake his report cards to show A’s using old progress reports, scissors, glue, and a photocopier.
His grades were good enough for him to enter Ryerson University on early admission, and he told his parents he would spend two years there studying science before transferring to the more prestigious University of Toronto to study pharmacology as his father had always wanted.
Pan began dating Wong in the eleventh grade, even though her parents, Bich Ha (RIGHT) and Huei Hann (LEFT), disapproved of their relationship.
However, in his final semester, Pan failed calculus, preventing him from graduating, and Ryerson withdrew its offer of admission.
Instead of telling the truth, Pan continued to act as if nothing was wrong, maintaining this lie for two whole years and even taking the bus downtown to pretend he was going to conferences.
What did Daniel Wong do?
When it came time for Pan to “graduate” from the University of Toronto, which she never attended, Wong helped her find someone who could fake an A-level university transcript.
Pan then told his parents that he had gotten a volunteer job in the blood testing lab at SickKids Hospital.
However, her father Huei Hann became suspicious after noticing that she did not have a uniform or access card to enter the building.
Hann decided to take matters into his own hands and one day insisted on dropping her off at work before his wife followed Pan into the hospital, where she was nowhere to be found.
The next morning, he called the friend Pan was supposed to be living with and found out that she never stayed there.
Ultimately, the Pans confronted their daughter and she admitted that she had never attended the University of Toronto and had stayed at Wong’s house.
The 24-year-old shelled out $10,000 for the attackers to enter the family home (pictured) and shoot her parents in the head, but miraculously her father survived.
Eric Carty (left) and David Mylvaganam (right) were found guilty of their involvement in the crime and sentenced to time behind bars.
After her parents found out about her web of lies, Pan was banned from seeing her boyfriend and their relationship began to fall apart: Wong began dating someone new.
Pan was furious but, after briefly rekindling things with Wong, they planned to kill her parents so the young couple could move in together and collect a $500,000 inheritance.
Wong introduced Pan to one of the hitmen, Lenford Crawford, who agreed to carry out the murder for $10,000.
But the accomplice soon decided to return to his other girlfriend and asked Pan if she still wanted to go ahead with the hit, to which she replied: “I want it for myself.”
On November 8, 2010, Pan’s mother was watching television and his father was sleeping in his room.
It was at this point that he is said to have sent a text message to the killers and instructed them to enter the house.
Crawford and his associates David Mylvaganam and Eric Carty entered through the open front door, each with his own weapon.
The intruders dragged Hann out of his room and into the living room, while pretending to be staging a home invasion by tying Pan’s hands to a railing.

The group stole some money hidden in the house and then took the parents to the basement where each was shot several times.
Police found blood splatters throughout the house, and one investigator called it “something we’ve never seen before.”
Pan told police in interviews: ‘All I could hear was my father shouting in the street. He was yelling at him but he didn’t want to go in.
The group stole some money hidden in the house and then took the parents to the basement where each was shot several times.
His mother died from a gunshot wound. Her father was shot in the face, but miraculously survived.
The killers fled and Pan pulled a cell phone from his waist to call 911.
He seemed panicked and out of breath as he told the operator: “Please help me.” I need help. I don’t know where my parents are.
What happened to Daniel Wong and where is he now?
When Hann woke up from a three-day medically induced coma, he told investigators details of the home invasion that brought Pan under suspicion.
She said she saw her daughter talking to one of the men “like a friend” and that her arms were not tied behind her back as she was led through the house.
Investigators brought the 24-year-old in for questioning and she quickly admitted to hiring the men to kill her parents.
However, he claimed that his relationship with his father improved and he called off the murder-suicide plot and had nothing to do with what happened.
The police did not believe her story and she was eventually charged.
Pan, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in December 2014.
Along with Pan and the two thugs he hired to help carry out his plan, Daniel Wong was also found guilty.
In 2015, all four received life sentences for murder and life sentences for attempted murder, with sentences to be served concurrently.
Daniel Wong is currently in prison but, like Pan, will be eligible for parole after 25 years, in 2035.
