Police have revealed the body of a Queensland grandmother (pictured, Wendy Hansen) was found 800km from her home in woodland near a major tourist area.

The body of a Queensland grandmother has been found 800 kilometres from her home in a forest near a tourist destination, seven months after she was last seen alive.

Wendy Hansen, 63, was last seen at an ATM in her hometown of Monto, 120 kilometres inland from Bundaberg, on February 29.

She was reported missing to police when she failed to return home, and police found CCTV footage of her driving along the main Queensland highway 400 kilometres south later on February 29.

Queensland Police continued their public pressure for information in the following months.

But on Thursday, New South Wales Police revealed that Ms Hansen’s body was found on June 18.

Her remains were found half-buried in bushland near Jordan Esplanade in Coffs Harbour.

A volunteer carrying out bush regeneration work at Jetty Beach made a shocking discovery.

A backpack, silver earrings, hairpins and a copy of Anne-Marie Conway’s novel ‘Butterfly Summer’ were found near the scene.

Detectives initially believed the bones could have been there for many years, before further testing revealed they belonged to Ms Hansen.

NSW homicide detectives have not found Ms Hansen’s 2007 silver two-door Mitsubishi Pajero with Queensland registration 645TCZ.

In a statement Thursday, New South Wales detectives say they are specifically interested in finding the car and want anyone with dashcam footage from the vehicle to come forward.

Ms Hansen’s death is being treated as suspicious.
