A waiter has taken tipping matters into his own hands, after a regular customer continued to leave less than 10 per cent tip on his bill.

“Last night I received a nine percent tip,” Gomez says in the TikTok video.

Gomez went on to explain that she had spoken to other servers and that they had also received similar advice from the woman.

“I guess this is a pattern with her,” he said. “Its margin of inclination ranges between seven and nine percent.”

The waiter said he saw the woman waiting to go to the bathroom, and that’s when he approached her to ask her about her low tips.

“I walked up to her and said, ‘Hey, how was everything tonight?'” he recalled, saying the customer had told him it was “great.”

“(I said) amazing,” he recalled happily. “You left me a nine percent tip, so I wanted to see if there was any way to improve.”

The customer then reportedly paused and responded “no.”

Gomez said the woman sat in another part of the restaurant the next time she dined at the establishment, where he was not serving, but he served her anyway.

“I told the waiter, ‘I already have this,'” he said. ‘I put down the cocktails and said, “Long time no see!”‘

She then slyly added that the staff Googled her and discovered that she owns her own company.

“So I hope she learns something from our little exchange,” he said. “And if not, I did what I could.”

Her confrontational response to the low tip sparked a debate about what the appropriate reaction is.

‘Girl, I serve too and I think we should be grateful that people tip us. It’s completely optional, but I’m disappointed, especially when you gave it your all,” one user wrote.

‘I would like someone to confront me about the optional money I’m leaving!’ Another responded sarcastically.

Other users say they would be inclined not to tip if their server had confronted them.

“I would have talked to the manager and changed my tip to ZERO after that ‘confrontation,'” another shared.

‘I’m so happy you confronted her and I need an update!’ praised another person.

Tipping has long been customary in the United States, but notable price increases in recent years have led some consumers to reconsider their tipping.

Last year, debates over tipping etiquette erupted this month after New York magazine The Cut published new “guidelines.”

The suggestions, which were intended to be a new code of honour, sparked a furore after they advised people to routinely leave a 20 per cent tip no matter what to avoid being considered “rude”.
