VIDEO: Brooklyn driver runs a red light and causes an accident that kills two pedestrians and injures five

Date:

A runaway driver ran a red light in Brooklyn on Monday, sparking a gruesome chain reaction crash that left two pedestrians dead and five injured, police said.

The 49-year-old man ran a red light on Eighteenth Avenue at 64th Street in Bensonhurst around 12:50 p.m., police said.

He crashed into a car heading eastbound on 64th Street and lost control on the sidewalk, shocking surveillance video from the scene shows.

At least one of the cars struck the victims, two of whom could not be saved.

One person was taken to Maimonides Hospital, where he is clinging to life. Four others were also transported to area hospitals and are expected to survive.

The driver who caused the accident stayed at the scene and was taken into custody, police said.

He was not immediately charged as police continued to investigate the accident. The police investigate whether he was drunk.
