A private island once frequented by celebrities and first ladies is for sale for $2.97 million

A private island where Eleanor Roosevelt once spent all her summers, and which Brooke Shields once owned, has hit the market for just under $3 million.

The 8.6-acre island, known as Camp Northwind, sits in the middle of Lake Chazy in New York’s Adirondack Mountains and is accessible from the town of Ellenburg Depot by boat or a private road.

The historic property, on the market for $2.97 million, was built in 1928 by popular early 20th-century baritone opera singer and recording artist Reinald Werrenrath and designed by noted architectural firm McKim Mead & White .

Mrs. Roosevelt spent so much time there that she became good friends with her neighbors, agents told DailyMail.com.

The property was also owned by former child star Brooke Shields in the 1990s.

“Joan Crawford and Clark Gable were reported to be vacationing there during the time Werrenrath owned the campground,” said Agent Nancy White. SF Gate.

‘There is currently nothing like it for sale in the entire Adirondack Park. It is unique with the ancient sandstone from the ground to the second level around the main house.’

The property’s unique architecture and notable history landed it on the National Register of Historic Places.

“The minute you drive off the road and get to the campground, you realize it’s a very special place with a lot of attention to detail,” White said. ‘There are views of the lake from almost every window. “It’s very peaceful.”
