UFC: Conor McGregor NEEDs his Dustin Poirier decision-maker more than his enemy after latest Twitter feud
In just seven tweets, the goodwill that had existed between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier has been doused in fuel and set on fire.
Controversy makes money. And ironically, this controversy was all about the money that never came.
$ 500,000 was pledged by McGregor to Poirier’s Good Fight Foundation for their meeting at UFC 257 last January. After months of waiting and no sign of money, the American decided to make his grumbles public.

McGregor was furious after Poirier said he had not donated $ 500,000 as promised
The Irishman hit back, insisting that his team take their due diligence to know where his donation would be spent ‘point to point’ in an effort to explain the $ 500,000 no-show.
Eleven hours later, McGregor hit the nuclear button.
‘You’ve torn your inbreeding hillbilly. Why are you winking your ears? You’re brain-dead hillbilly. 500k without plan. You hold on tight. Fool. You must be new to money, ”he tweeted.
‘The battle is over, by the way. I’m going to fight someone else on the 10th. Good luck with your old contract child. ‘
McGregor labeled Poirier a ‘brain-dead hillbilly’ and said the trilogy attack has been disabled
Poirier quickly responded to McGregor’s rant with a clip of him knocking out the Irishman
This is certainly the most excited McGregor has been since his toxic rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018. Cooler heads should prevail in the coming days and there are currently no real concerns that the fight is over, but McGregor’s Twitter rant has hinted. on a rediscovery of the fire that took him to UFC glory.
The 32-year-old was full of pleasantries for Donald Cerrone before knocking out the UFC veteran in less than a minute in January 2020. A warm hug with Cowboy’s grandmother was a strange sight for a man who had so frankly insulted Nurmagomedov’s friends. and family.
The same quiet McGregor arrived on Fight Island for his rematch with Poirier. Surrounded by his family on a beautiful hunt during fight week, the Irishman’s respect for his lightweight rival was attributed to a maturity far from the days he stormed through the featherweight ranks.
Following his second round TKO defeat to Poirier, McGregor’s lack of intensity in the build-up was noted as a factor in his shortcomings at UFC 257.
McGregor’s rant is a far cry from the calm, grown-up figure seen in recent fights
The Irishman was full of platitudes for American rival Poirier before their fight on Fight Island
He was also respectful of Donald Cerrone and hugged Cowboy’s grandmother after their fight
“ The build-up (to a fight) I really believe some people need that lead, ” UFC legend Daniel Cormier told ESPN‘Do I think he should go as far as he went with Khabib’s (Nurmagomedov) fight? No, that was too far. But I think some of those guys need that edge a little bit.
And I think he’s showing a maturity for McGregor that he may not have had before, but I think some of these guys need that edge.
Does Conor have the motivation to go back and become the man who competed at the level he did all those times? Like, seeing a grown young man is okay, let’s not make it seem that way, but this is a sport where the bandits often win.
‘You know, sometimes the bad guy in Mixed Martial Arts wins … Dustin Poirier is a good guy. And he’s one of the good guys who win. But I think for certain guys, man, you have to have that advantage. They just need it. ‘
But experts like Daniel Cormier (left) claim McGregor needs an edge to fight at the top level
McGregor was at his best for fighting Jose Aldo, Dennis Siver and Khabib
Poirier’s decision to voice his grievances at McGregor may have helped the Irishman rediscover the lead that took him to the double victory in the championship.
McGregor used steroid head Dennis Siver’s doping offenses as the motivation for their 2015 clash. He steamed the German to win by knockout in the second round.
He transformed the disappointment of Jose Aldo’s withdrawal from their July 2015 title fight into an added incentive to first beat Chad Mendes and then finally get his hands on the Brazilian’s belt and defeat the all-conquering champion in just 13 seconds.
This $ 500,000 feud with Poirier could serve as a catalyst in getting McGregor back to winning roads within the octagon and catapulting him into the lightweight title settlement.
His latest feud with Poirier started a fire, but has the July 10 trilogy really been canceled?
That is, if the couple actually met on July 10.
McGregor says the fight is over, and he will certainly have a long line of fighters willing to meet him at UFC 264. So he is unlikely to be affected financially if he faces another fighter, that is his popularity.
But the harsh reality is that if McGregor has to be in the octagon on July 10, the man facing him has to be Dustin Poirier.
Over the course of his UFC career, McGregor has tried to make sure the story is in his favor.
The Irishman immediately rescheduled Nate Diaz after his shocking defeat in 2016 to rectify the mistake that had derailed his tilt on the lightweight title. After his defeat to Nurmagomedov, McGregor insisted that he had “won the war” in the post-fight brawl that marred the Dagestani’s victory.
Financially, Poirier needs the fight more. But McGregor has a reputation to recover from his loss
Plus, the Irishman’s bid to win the lightweight title seems tricky without beating Poirier
McGregor is now tied 1-1 with Poirier after beating him in 2014. Given the nature of his defeat at UFC 257, the Irishman’s pride will certainly drive him to a third leg to finish the series.
Plus, it’s hard to chart his path to the lightweight title if he hasn’t avenged his defeat to The Diamond.
He could pursue conflicts with Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson or Islam Makhachev, all of which would grab the public’s attention, all of which would bring in more than a million pay-per-view purchases.
But without avenging that defeat to Poirier, his credibility as a champion will be overshadowed by the shadow of the pummeling he received on Fight Island.
As it stands now, Poirier is next in line for a shot at the lightweight title that Khabib has left
For Poirier, he’ll be the hardest hit financially if the fight doesn’t take place, but make no mistake, the Louisianan’s status as the next in line for the lightweight title won’t be hurt in the slightest.
His monumental victory in January has cemented his position as the man to beat. Poirier’s decision to continue the money fight with McGregor – described as ‘smart’ by UFC chief Dana White – set the stage for Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler to fight for Nurmagomedov’s vacant title.
A canceled trilogy fight with McGregor means Poirier is simply waiting his turn to take on the UFC 262 main event winner, as he has the most claim for a shot at the title.
As it stands now, you’d predict that cooler heads should prevail. Poirier voicing McGregor for not being able to cough up will certainly have embarrassed the Irishman, but the July 10 fight is as important to Poirier financially as it is to McGregor’s reputation.
Cooler heads should triumph in what will be a bitter trilogy fight at UFC 264 this summer
