Paramedics who arrived at the scene in a Rescue 510 helicopter attempted to revive her but she died at the scene.

Queensland Police are currently investigating whether the woman suffered a medical episode.

The reef is located about 60 kilometers northeast of Cairns.

In November, Adrian Meyer from Angaston, South Australia, died after he and a group of divers were swept away by a strong current while on the reef.

The 71-year-old was with his son, Nicholas Meyer, and daughter, Angela Henson, about 60 kilometers off the coast northeast of Cairns when the disaster struck.

Meyer had traveled to Cairns to see the World Heritage Area as part of a belated 70th birthday present.
