The body of a woman was recovered from the waters off the jetty of a popular tourist town while a desperate search was launched for another woman who jumped into a river.

A search operation for the first woman began in the early hours of Friday in the far north Queensland town of Palm Cove, about 25 kilometers north of Cairns.

Police were called to the Palm Cove jetty around 2.30am when a woman entered the water but did not surface.

A police spokeswoman said no details were available at this time about the circumstances.

Water police, surf lifeguards and local police participated in the search. About 7am on Friday, Surf Life Saving Queensland volunteers found the body around the northern headland near Buchans Point beach.

In a statement, police say investigations are continuing, but the incident is not considered suspicious.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Meanwhile, an urgent search has been launched for a woman who jumped into the River Bremer in Ipswich and did not resurface.

Emergency services responded around 5.45am on Friday to reports that a woman had entered the river but was not seen again.

Police closed one lane of the David Trumpy Bridge while they search for the woman.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
