Tottenham are playing hardball with Real Madrid by demanding Marco Asensio in exchange for Christian Eriksen, according to reports.

Madrid are keeping tabs on the Danish midfielder this summer after he recently revealed he wants to leave Tottenham as he would ‘like to try something new’ next season.

The Spanish giants are looking to revamp their squad following an underwhelming campaign both domestically and in Europe and they view Eriksen as being a success for years to come in their midfield.

It was reported earlier that Madrid would entice Tottenham by offering £45m plus midfielder Dani Ceballos for Eriksen.

But according to the Sun, Spurs want Asensio – who has more first-team experience – in any deal instead even if it only means coming on a season-long loan initially.

But Zinedine Zidane, looking to put his stamp on the Madrid squad again, does not want to let the exciting Asensio leave the Bernabeu.

The Spain international has emerged as one of the hottest talents around, having made 44 appearances for Madrid last season and 22 overall for his country.

Following Tottenham’s Champions League final loss, the club received a further blow as Eriksen confirmed he would like a new challenge.

The 27-year-old said: ‘I feel that I am at a place in my career where I might want to try something new.

‘I have the wildest and deepest respect for everything that has happened in Tottenham, nor will it be negative. But I have also said that I would like to try something new.’
