Alexander Isak scored his 13th Premier League goal of the season to boost Newcastle’s progress in the Champions League with a fifth successive victory and condemn Spurs to a fifth defeat in seven.
Dominic Solanke got the hosts off to a good start with a header from a looping cross in front of Thomas Tuchel, who was attending his first match as England’s new manager.
In a familiar turn of events for Spurs, their lead did not last long. Lucas Bergvall appeared to hit the ball on Joelinton’s arm before the Brazilian played a pass to Bruno Guimaraes, who found the onrushing Gordon.
The England star took one touch before firing home and running off to celebrate, but Ange Postecoglou became enraged and asked in vain for a hand-up.
The red-hot Alexander Isak completed the comeback late in the second half, latching on to a Jacob Murphy cross, the Englishman’s seventh assist of a good campaign.
After another exciting match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, mail sports Craig Hope was present to apply the rule to both groups of players.
Dominic Solanke headed home in the first four minutes to give Tottenham the lead.
But Newcastle came back strongly thanks to a composed goal from Anthony Gordon minutes later.

Tottenham Hotspur (4-2-3-1)
BRANDON AUSTIN: 6.5
Perhaps he could have done more with Gordon’s opener, but he recovered and gave a decent account on debut. In particular, he handled the crosses well and made a couple of decent saves.
PEDRO PORRO: 5.5
He provided a series of dangerous deliveries, especially for the first goal. Well in the future, I suspect we will return, depending.
RADU DRAGUSIN: 4.5
Suffering from illness and Isak, the first half was difficult for the Romanian before retiring at half-time.
ARCHIE GRAY: 5.5
Another who battled both illness and Newcastle’s leaders, he struggled in the first half and his inexperience showed at times. Great block by Tonali in the second half.
Pedro Porro made a series of dangerous deliveries, especially in the first goal.
The boos when Lucas Bergvall’s number went up in the 62nd minute told you everything
SPENCE DJED: 5.5
He did not do enough to stop Murphy’s cross towards Isak’s goal and the area behind him was attacked by the visitors. It was better when he was moved to centre-back after the break.
LUCAS BERGVALL: 7
The boos when his numbers increased in the 62nd minute said it all: he had been Spurs’ best player. Smart on the ball and good industry.
PAPE SARR: 5
He worked hard but didn’t offer the control Spurs needed in the middle. No wonder he was hooked after the hour.
BRENNAN JOHNSON: 6
He came into play more in the second half and broke the post. He was then guilty of missing the target when crossing the goal with Spurs on top.
DEJAN KULUSEVSKI: 6
He always wanted the ball and did everything possible to cause a tie, but without any joy.
TIMO WERNER: 4.5
He did well to stay for 62 minutes. He did almost nothing, not for the first time.
DOMINICO SOLANKE: 6.5
Super start against Thomas Tuchel when he beat Botman to score inside four minutes. It was difficult at times, but he didn’t take advantage of the opportunities that came his way in the second half.
Winger Brennan Johnson entered the game in the second half and broke the post.
Dejan Kulusevski always wanted the ball and did everything possible to provoke something that would achieve the tie.

Newcastle (4-3-3)
MARTIN DUBRAVKA: 7
He had to make saves and he made them. He was also better at crossing. A solid performance when his team needed it.
TINO LIVRAMENTO: 7.5
His best game of the season after Trippier’s call. He carried the ball and used it effectively. He was also smart at the back.
SVEN BOTMAN: 7
A shaky start after 10 months out when Solanke missed the goal, but he bounced back and produced several important interceptions and blocks.
Tino Livramento had his best game of the season after Kieran Trippier’s call-up
Sven Botman had a shaky start after 10 months out after losing Solanke for the goal
THEY GIVE A BURN: 8 MAN OF THE MATCH
He accelerated in the second half when those in front of him let off the accelerator. Great blocking, headers and interceptions. Newcastle’s player of the season so far.
LEWIS ROOM: 6.5
Another constant display and no harm was done against Tuchel. He didn’t advance that much, but he did well against Johnson.
BRUNO GUIMARÁES: 7
Everything good about Newcastle’s first half happened through him. He faded after the break before returning and helping to see the home team win.
SANDRO TONALI: 6.5
Very quiet start but he reached the break towards the break and his team improved because of it. But like others, he looked tired in the second half before the late revival.
JOELINTON: 5.5
Too often careless with the ball, this was not one of his best games. Part of a midfield that was lost in the second half.
JACOB MURPHY: 6.5
Another assist for Isak and another display of energy and effort on the right. Quiet second half.
Everything good about Newcastle’s first half came through Bruno Guimaraes
Another assist for Isak and another demonstration of energy and effort from Jacob Murphy on the right
ALEJANDRO ISAK: 6.5
Seventh consecutive league game in which he scored and made the Spurs defenders nervous in the first half. However, after the break it was not possible to put the improvised back line in danger.
ANTONIO GORDON: 7
A first half with constant threat and he scored his goal well. He had two good chances for a second. It would have impressed Tuchel.
