South Fremantle is in chaos after its highly decorated coach Todd Curley left the club.

The 2020 premiership coach has opted not to seek a contract renewal at the end of the season, meaning his tenure as the longest-serving coach in South Fremantle history is over.

Curley has led the Bulldogs since 2014 and has taken the club to finals in all but two of his seasons in charge. He also led the team to three consecutive grand finals between 2019 and 2021.

His departure marks the second major blow to hit the WAFL in just 48 hours after Peter German resigned as Perth coach with immediate effect.

“On Monday, I informed Director of Football Charlie Burke and Chairman Peter Christie that, following the completion of the 2024 season, I would not be seeking a contract extension to continue as Head Coach of the South Fremantle Football Club,” Curley said.

‘It has not been an easy decision, however it is becoming increasingly clear that I no longer have the desire to manage the time and responsibilities of caring for my family, working full-time and being Head Coach of South Fremantle Football Club.

‘I have been very lucky to be involved with this great club for 10 seasons, something I never imagined when I took the job at the end of 2014. During that time, we have enjoyed some fantastic experiences and I have met some fantastic people.

‘A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in our programme during my time at the club – players, coaches, support staff, volunteers, management and the board – as they have all had an impact on creating the environment we wanted.

‘I will be forever grateful for all of your commitment, resilience, expertise and friendship. ‘Lastly, and most importantly, to Paula, Thalia, Aiden and my family, thank you for all of your love and support.

“We hope to be able to add a little more to the final chapter during the final weeks of the 2024 season. After that, I’m looking forward to taking a break and looking forward to what comes next.”
