You are not just running a new Lord of the Rings game. But that is exactly what Athlon Games, the team behind Warframe and Gears of War 4, is doing.
Athlon, the owner of Digital Extremes and Splash Damage, has signed a deal with Middle-earth Enterprises (the licensees of the fantasy world of JRR Tolkien) to develop a new online game full of orcs, hobbits and fairies.
"It's a unique opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the historical fantasy work of JRR Tolkien, and we're excited about the revival of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP, "said Dave Miller, president, Athlon Games.
The game is a harbinger of the well-known stories of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, instead it takes place in the deep history of Middle-earth and easily avoids all canonical problems.
What kind of game it will be, or on what platforms it will appear, remains a mystery. But given Athlon Games' pedigree with free online titles like Warframe, it would not be surprising if the path is here.
Fans of the Lord of the Rings series have done surprisingly well when it comes to games that disrupt the franchise. Although the sequel Shadow of War proved controversial, Middle-earth: Shadow or Mordor was very nice. The Lord of the Rings Online, a traditional MMO game, is still going strong, and a number of beat-em-ups and strategy games have also impressed over the years.
In addition, the revival of interest in the IP will be continued with a new Amazon Prime TV program, again based on the unexplored past of the franchise.
