The United States women’s national team survived a pair of questionable goals from the Canadians to win the SheBelieves Cup in a penalty shootout Tuesday night.
The game was tied at 2 at the end of regulation after a double each by American forward Sophia Smith and Canadian Adriana León.
Both Canadian goals would have been checked by VAR in a larger tournament, as the SheBelieves Cup depended solely on the referee’s decisions.
Controversial American star Korbin Albert was substituted in the 75th minute and received a mixed reaction from the Columbus crowd.
The United States trailed 1-0 at halftime after León scored into an empty net in the 40th minute.

Albert later apologized for the post.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media,” Albert said. “Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive and hurtful was immature and disrespectful, which was never my intention.”
“I am truly disappointed in myself and I am deeply sorry for the harm I have caused to my teammates, other players, fans, friends and anyone who was offended,” Albert continued.
