A drunk man stabbed his father's friend to death because he thought he was picked up during a drinking session.

Connor Stephen Milton, 21, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday at the West Australian Supreme Court in Perth, following the stabbing of 34-year-old Craig Wilson.

Milton drank last year with his father and two of his father's friends in a Clarkson home.

An argument broke out and Milton began to shout and shout at the men, the court heard.

Justice Hall accepted that Milton repented, but said the general deterrence against alcohol consumption was also a penalty.

The 21-year-old must serve at least 16 years in prison.
