Shots were fired at a Border Patrol agent who was sitting in his car marked near the border with the United States and Mexico, near San Diego, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning, said the Border Patrol agency.

An officer was sitting in his patrol car about two miles west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Two bullets hit the driver's side of the vehicle while the agent was inside, but he was not injured.

The agent immediately drove to a safer place.

Authorities believe that the shots were fired from the Mexican side of the border.

Mexican authorities responded to the scene and detained two people, one of whom had a gun.

The unarmed person was finally released.

The Mexican government has not yet identified either of the two detainees.

The FBI has joined the investigation.
