A retiree in her eighties who met her husband while queuing to pay their respects to the late Queen has revealed her great-grandson’s amused response when she announced their engagement.

Joyce Lambert, 89, and Norman Giller, 85, from Southend-on-Sea, joined Kate Garraway and Adil Ray on Good Morning Britain on Friday to talk about their unconventional love story.

The couple, who exchanged vows in an intimate wedding ceremony last week after a whirlwind romance over the past five years, revealed they were hoping to find the woman who filmed their proposal to thank her.

Speaking on the show, Joyce recalled telling her family about her exciting engagement, prompting a humiliating comment from her five-year-old great-grandson.

She explained: “When my son was talking to his wife about his mother getting married, my great-grandson Harrison turned around and said, ‘grandmas don’t get married, they die.’

Speaking about the moment he asked the question, Norman said: “A lady was walking by and I gave her my iPhone and she surprisingly knew how to use it, she took (the video) and we don’t know who she is, but she would.” I’d love to thank you.’

The clip showed Norman kneeling in a park on a windy day and Joyce said: “I thought he fell in the wind.”

Presenters Kate and Adil burst into laughter and Joyce continued: “I didn’t realize he was taking a knee,” Norman added: “It was gale-force winds.”

Speaking about what attracted them to each other, Joyce said it was her husband’s sense of style, while Norman joked about “his money.”

Norman later joked that the couple will postpone having children for the first year of marriage.

Norman, a former Fleet Street journalist, said finding love in his 80s was not something he had ever expected, but said “it’s never too late to find love.”

Norman said the couple’s political differences were not a problem for him, but added: “I may be Joyce’s toy, but I’m not her conservative boy.”

The now-married couple is happy to enjoy finding love together in their eighth decade. Norman said: “I’ve had the best life in the world.”
