A man accused of murdering his mother appeared in court for the first time as neighbors describe his death as a “shock to the system”.
Joan Drane, 78, was found dead inside her home of four decades in Yangebup, in Perth’s southern suburbs, about 7.15am on Monday.
Police allege that Andre Lafayette Drane, 54, murdered his elderly mother sometime between Saturday and Monday.
It is understood neighbors raised the alarm after blood, including bloody footprints, was seen outside the house on Monday morning.
Drane first appeared at Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday with what appeared to be an injured hand and leg.

He reportedly limped to the stand wearing a white T-shirt and jeans and spoke only once to confirm his name. PerthNow reports.
Drane was remanded in custody to reappear in court on May 29.
It comes as neighbors reveal their shock at the death of the long-term resident and several leave flowers outside Ms Drane’s home.
One woman said the news was a “shock to the system.”
“Devastated, I couldn’t believe it… I’m still in shock,” she said. 7news.
Western Australia Premier Roger Cook described the alleged murder as “complex and traumatic”.
