Authorities have also not clarified what caused the gunman to shoot the 47-year-old man.
The shooting took place at the Sutter Avenue station in East New York, Brooklyn, around 3 p.m. Officers later detained Derell Mickles, 37, as a suspect.
Police say two officers assigned to transit duty followed the defendant up the stairs, who had not paid the fare, and jumped over the turnstile.
“The officers ask him to stop. The man refuses to stop at a certain point on the platform.
“The man mutters the words, ‘I’m going to kill you if you don’t stop following me,'” said New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey.
After leaving voluntarily, he returned to the station, jumped over the turnstile again, verbally threatened the officers and then pulled out the knife.
Despite being warned 38 times, the suspect did not hesitate and police had to shoot him with a Taser.
But this did not break him and he ended up in a physical fight with them.
An officer was reportedly shot in the right side of the torso, while a 26-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet and Gregory Delpeche, 49, was seriously injured, according to ABC7.
A second officer was taken to the hospital but was not shot.
