Alexei Sh, 14, fell to the ground when his high wire harnesses broke while he was performing laps in the Russian city of Zarechny in the Sverdlovsk region.
His young partner Camila was watching him in the circus arena as part of the show and he was seen fleeing backstage, visibly shocked at his horrific fall.
Alexei lay motionless on the floor of the large studio as paramedics rushed over.
He underwent emergency, life-saving cranial surgery and is scheduled to be transferred to a specialized hospital and is now in a coma.

Other young gymnasts are seen in footage from Mash Ural media looking on in horror as the medical team administers first aid to the stricken gymnast after a fall.
The young group is then removed from the haunting scene.
The singer continues to perform but suddenly turns around and realizes that there is a terrible accident behind her.
The show was discontinued after the tragedy.
The talented gymnast was rushed to the hospital and left in a coma.
Reports said he suffered “brain contusions and a fractured temporal bone”.
He is now still in an induced coma while doctors study his condition.
The gymnast had gone to London in 2017 for a run with his partner, and a photo shows the two of them outside Buckingham Palace.
The boy’s mother works at the circus headquarters but was on vacation and did not witness the fall, according to local reports.

Police confiscated “faulty equipment” and videos of the incident.
A criminal case was opened of “providing services that do not meet safety requirements” and “negligence resulting in serious bodily harm to the victim”, it was reported.
“The investigation is ongoing,” a statement said.
The maximum penalty is up to six years in prison.
