The relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle has always been distant, with reports suggesting a notably frosty dynamic. Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” offers insight into the occasional tension between Markle and Middleton.
An incident during the 2018 Royal Foundation Forum, highlighted by yahoo, highlights the discomfort between the sisters-in-law. Markle, having forgotten his lip gloss, asked to borrow Middleton’s, prompting an awkward moment before going on stage with Harry and Prince William.
Describing the moment, Harry wrote: “Meg asked to borrow Kate’s lip gloss. Something American. “Meg forgot hers, was worried she might need some, and turned to Kate for help.” According to the Mirrorfurther detailed Middleton’s reaction, stating: “Kate, bewildered, reached into her purse and reluctantly pulled out a small tube.
Meg put some on her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced. A little clash of styles, perhaps? Something we should have been able to laugh about soon after. But she left a small mark.” Harry noted that the media felt it was more significant.
Harry also suggested that Middleton may have been uncomfortable because Markle’s entry into the royal family introduced new competition. Another part of “Spare” addresses the controversy surrounding bridesmaid dresses before Harry and Markle’s wedding. After getting engaged, Markle had her dress measured just four days before the wedding.
Harry explained that Middleton insisted the dress needed to be completely re-sewn, while Markle believed her tailor could make adjustments. This disagreement increased tension between the two women. Before meeting Markle, Harry had imagined forming a “fab 4” with his brother Middleton and his future partner.
As reported by page six, wrote: “I also said that I couldn’t wait for you to meet her, that I hoped the four of us would spend a lot of time together.” Harry expressed his desire to have a partner who would participate equally in his joint ventures with William and the Waleses. However, Harry claims that William tempered her aspirations, reportedly saying: “She is an American actress after all, Harold. Anything could happen”.
Royal fans hoping for a reconciliation may need to temper their expectations. Royal expert Tom Quinn suggested that the relationship between Markle and Middleton has become too “poisonous” to heal. In April, Quinn noted: “Meghan doesn’t feel guilty about Kate because she feels Kate should have been the only person in the royal family to have her back through every hardship. “Apart from anything else, Meghan knew that Kate was an outsider, so she simply couldn’t understand why Kate always toed the royal line instead of supporting her, Meghan, the other outsider,” according to Fashion.
