Acclaimed Tasmanian artist George Davis has died aged 94.

Davis, father of Australian actress Essie Davis, is known for his paintings of birds, plants and Tasmanian landscapes.

One of his most famous works of art is a large mosaic mural on the former ABC and Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music buildings in Hobart.

Davis was commissioned in 1961 to create the 19-meter mural after winning a design competition.

The mosaic is made up of 150,000 glass tiles and inspired the ABC logo.

His daughter Essie previously said she thought the mural was “a great piece of art.”

‘I have always been very proud of my father’s work. He is an extraordinary artist, a master draftsman and a colorist, an observer of nature and humanity,” he told alphabet.

“I think if you make a great piece of art like that, you hope it lasts forever because that’s how we remember the culture.”
