Tanya Plibersek in ‘Voldemort’ attack on Peter Dutton – ‘kids who watched Harry Potter frightened’

Senior Labor MP Tanya Plibersek has launched an extraordinary personal attack on Liberal MP Peter Dutton, comparing him to Harry Potter’s archenemy Voldemort.

talking on the radio station 4BCMs Plibersek was asked for her opinion on Mr Dutton, who is almost certain to be the new leader of the Liberal Party.

“Well, I think there will be a lot of kids who have seen a lot of Harry Potter films who will be very scared by what they see tonight, that’s for sure,” the Labor leader replied.

But comments from the woman predicted to be the next education minister have been called “disgusting” by Sky News commentator Andrew Bolt.

“Why are Labor so often personally nasty and dismissive, even about how people look?” Bolt said.

Scott Emerson, who was interviewing Ms Plibersek on 4BC, also seemed surprised by what she had just said.

‘What, are you saying it looks weird, it looks weird?’ she asked her.

“I’m saying he looks a bit like Voldemort and we’ll see if he can do what he promised he would do the last time he ran for leader, which is smile more,” he said.

Emerson said that it sounded like he was attacking Dutton for his appearance.

‘No, I’m just saying it’s not the warm and friendly face of the Liberal Party,’ she replied.

“And if this last election taught us anything, it taught us that the Liberal Party has moved too far to the extremes of politics.”

The radio host later criticized Ms. Plibersek, whom he said is a “capable, smart and talented” politician, for her comments.

“I was a little below her, I don’t normally hear her say that sort of thing, I was a little surprised when she said that,” Emerson said.

“I think it was poor, and I suspect she’s regretting it right now.”

Speaking on Sky News on Wednesday night, Bolt said: “I actually know why Labor is going crazy over Dutton, because they’re scared.” He’s tough, he’s smart, he’s a great communicator.

“He’s an ex-cop, he’s going to be very credible and turn liberals into a party for fighters, focusing on the cost of living and yelling nonsense.”

However, Bolt also confronted the former prime minister, saying that Dutton “unlike Scott Morrison, he represents something.” I think he is brave as well as conservative.

“And remember, the Liberals have never won an opposition election without a Conservative leader…so that’s what scares Labour.”

Ms Plibersek is far from the only senior Labor politician to have attacked the expected next Liberal leader this week.

On Monday, Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan criticized Dutton for not being fit to be prime minister.

“He’s an extremist and I don’t think he fits in with modern Australia at all,” McGowan said.

“He doesn’t seem to listen, he’s extremely conservative and I don’t really think he’s that smart.

‘I have seen it present in things [and] I really don’t understand that there is much there.

“Unlike Scott Morrison, who is a smart guy, I don’t realize that Peter Dutton is fit to be prime minister.”

Then on Tuesday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said: “I’m trying to be as polite as possible” about Mr Dutton, who was Defense Minister under Scott Morrison.

‘He has not yet become the leader. If he does, then I wish him well, but he has made a whole series of comments about Victoria.

‘You need to remember this. It wasn’t that long ago when these people were running around saying that an African gang was going to kill us all and that we couldn’t go out to dinner.

While some within the Liberals believe the party needs to move downtown for a chance of regaining the inner-city seats it lost this time around, others believe the Liberals’ best hope is to fully embrace conservatism online. with Dutton’s vision.

Tony Abbott’s former chief of staff, Peta Credlin, was among those who made that case, urging the party to give up on wealthy voters who want more action on climate change.

By creating sharper points of difference with Labour, this plan would see the Liberals target suburban fighters, the mortgage belt and blue collar workers as a path back to government.
