A severe storm warning has been issued for parts of New South Wales as strong winds, large hail and flash flooding hit the state.

A strong storm hit Sydney, causing the airport, public transport and sporting events to come to an abrupt halt.

An unstable air mass combined with an upper trough produced wild weather across large swathes of New South Wales on Wednesday night.

Devastating winds, large hail and heavy rain not only destroyed Sydney, but also the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands forecast districts.

So far wind gusts exceeding 100km/h have been reported at Sydney Airport, Kurnell, Scone, Murrurindi Gap, Tamworth, Merriwa, Dubbo, Mullion, Bombala, Trangie, Cowra, Walgett, Cabrumurra and Wagga Wagga.

Sydney Airport has temporarily suspended all flights. It is not known when they will resume.

Arriving flights have been diverted to others Airports and planes taking off have returned to their gates.

The power outages also paralyzed light rail services between Town Hall and Circular Quay due to a power outage.

Travelers are recommended to walk or use alternative transportation.

Areas most likely to experience flooding include Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Parramatta, Armidale and Tamworth.

The state emergency service has advised all residents of the affected areas to prepare for the storm by protecting their property and anticipating damage.

Cars should be moved away from trees or anywhere that could be damaged by heavy rain and extreme winds.

All loose items should be stowed or tied down for the duration of the storm.
