A police investigation has confirmed the origin of a mysterious bone that washed up on a beach in Western Australia.

The 40cm bone was seen sticking out of the sand on Cottesloe Beach, 14km from Perth, at around 9am on Saturday.

WA Police secured the bone with the help of Surf Live Saving staff.

“A forensics officer attended Cottesloe Beach and collected the bone,” a WA Police spokesperson said.

The bone appears to be a femur.

A police spokesman said the bone had since undergone further evaluation by a pathologist who determined it was human.

“Further forensic tests will now be carried out to compare the bone with any missing person,” the spokesperson said.
