- The Tottenham coach was unhappy after his team’s 3-0 defeat against Fulham
- Ange Postecoglou sarcastically claimed that Spurs’ race for the top four is now ‘over’
- I fancy Manchester United on Sunday… something has to give against Jurgen’s giant. Everything is starting podcast
Ange Postecoglou was left furious after Tottenham’s 3-0 thrashing of Fulham saw his team miss out on a chance to advance to the Champions League places.
Spurs would have overtaken Aston Villa into the Premier League’s top four with a win and the manager went on a sarcastic rampage during his post-match tunnel interview.
The Australian is known for his no-nonsense answers to questions about Tottenham’s performances and was animated in suggesting that the race for a place in next season’s Champions League is now over.
After being asked by Sky Sports reporter Emma Saunders to what extent the defeat has affected Tottenham’s European ambitions, Postecoglou responded by expressing frustration at the line of questioning.
The 58-year-old, clearly upset, laughed and smiled before saying: “Look, it’s all over (the race for the top four), so we’ll go for sixth place.”
Ange Postecoglou was furious after Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Fulham
Tottenham’s players were left dejected at the end of the match after being dominated by Fulham at Craven Cottage.
‘I mean, what am I supposed to say? We are two points behind Villa. Yeah?
“What does that mean when there are 10 games left? What does that mean when there are 10 games left?” he added.
The exchange continued with more bizarre reactions from the Tottenham manager as it was suggested that Spurs had failed to build momentum after beating Villa last weekend.
Saunders added: “Just with the great strides they made in beating Aston Villa last weekend, we have the opportunity to build on that, to get into that top four just psychologically.”
Postecoglou made a series of exaggerated head movements before responding bluntly: ‘Psychologically, I don’t really worry about that stuff. There are 10 games and there is a lot of football to play.
“If we had one today, nothing was guaranteed; we could have lost last week, nothing was guaranteed.”
’10 game stops the game, so I don’t worry about that stuff and never have. It’s not just about falling somewhere on the ladder.’
Tottenham’s remaining goal this season is to qualify for the Champions League for the second year in a row as the club looks to further cement its place among Europe’s elite.
But the disgruntled coach further downplayed the importance of that goal and insisted that the most important thing is how his team plays, having been overtaken by Fulham.
“We can finish fourth, everyone is happy, brilliant, it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before at this football club.”
“The only thing that interests me is how we played and today we let ourselves down, so we have to learn from that, move on and face the next game.”
