Before this weekend’s title game, Staley, who never emerged victorious in March Madness as a player despite reaching the Final Four three times with Virginia between 1989 and 1992, warned Iowa star Caitlin Clark that The only way to ensure your legacy in women’s college basketball is to win a championship.

When asked about the importance of winning Sunday’s game over her undefeated team (37-0) for the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer in men’s and women’s basketball, Staley said: “I was very good in college, I never won a championship.” You have to win a championship. That’s me personally. I had a great career.

‘But it’s always, did you win a championship?’

Staley also sparked controversy before the national championship by claiming that transgender athletes “should be able to play” in women’s college basketball.

Speaking a day after South Carolina beat rival NC State in the Final Four last week, Staley said anyone who considers themselves a woman should be free to play.

“I’m of the opinion that if you’re a woman, you should play,” she said. “If you consider yourself a woman and want to play sports, or vice versa, you should be able to do so.”
