In the trailer for the series, which was released last month, viewers were able to see Sophie’s transformation into the criminal villain.

In the trailer, set to Habanera from the opera Carmen, Sophie was seen frolicking with co-star Frank Dillane, who plays her on-screen lover Boisie Hannington.

Sophie is also seen swallowing diamonds, a tactic the real-life Joan repeatedly used to temporarily hide any evidence of her crimes.

She is also seen marching down a hallway with a bruised face and possibly a broken nose, suggesting her life of crime may be an attempt to escape a dangerous environment.

Another shot of the actress looking over her shoulders suggests she is being pursued, and a later shot from the rearview mirror of a police vehicle with its lights flashing behind her seems to confirm this.

While the trailer hints that Joan will focus on some of the seedier aspects of the jewel thief’s life, it also shows some of the more glamorous parts of her life as she drives a sports car along a winding coastal road on rocky cliffs.

The ITV synopsis reads: ‘When her partner Gary goes on the run, Joan jumps at the chance to start a new life with her six-year-old daughter, Kelly.

Delving deeper into the criminal underworld, Joan meets Boisie, an enigmatic antiques dealer whose charm introduces her to new levels of danger and passion.

‘Thanks to a sharp intelligence, irresistible charm and a talent for imitation, Joan’s journey is a high-stakes game of survival and reinvention.

‘Every robbery and every stolen diamond is driven by his sole purpose: to create a secure future for his daughter.’

Much of what is known about Joan Hannington comes from her 2004 memoir, I Am What I Am.

The jewel thief, who called herself The Godmother, stopped studying at age 13 and at 17 married Ray Pavey, who had been convicted of armed robbery and was 10 years her senior, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Less than a year later, their daughter Debbie was born, but Ray went to prison when she was still a child, forcing Joan to place her in foster care.

One of the first things Joan stole was a car she used to go see her daughter Debbie, but she was quickly caught by the police. She and Pavey then split up and the wealthy couple who had been raising Debbie were given custody of her.

After serving a two-year probation sentence, Joan began working at an upmarket jewelry store, where she developed a habit of stealing and swallowing jewelry.

She later married Boisie Hannington, who worked publicly as an antiques dealer while being a thief behind the scenes.

Together, the two hatched schemes to forge checks and traffic in fake antiques, and Joan also continued to steal millions in jewelry.

But just days after her second child, a boy named Benny, was born, Joan’s husband Boisie was killed while trying to burn down a house to collect the insurance, leaving her a young widow.

The thief then apparently gave away his ill-gotten possessions and tried to start over, publishing his memoirs in 2004.

Hannington reportedly gave her take on the new series, which was created by Anna Symon and written by Symon and screenwriter and novelist Helen Black.

In his cover story for the June 2024 issue of British VogueSophie told how she was filming Joan in September 2023 when her split from husband Joe Jonas made headlines.

The Jonas Brothers singer filed for divorce from his actress wife and a court battle ensued over where their children would reside after he refused to take them to spend time with her in the UK as had allegedly been pre-planned.

“I remember being on set, I had been booked to be there for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave,” he recalled.

“My children were in the United States and I couldn’t go see them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started appearing.”

Sophie was photographed partying in the UK days before Joe filed for divorce. It later emerged that she had attended Joan’s leaving party.

Joan will be broadcast in Pay TV on September 29 for British viewers, While viewers in the United States will be able to watch it on The CW starting October 2.
